Oh yes, the slow pacing of the game is definitely one of the biggest flaws the game has, I believe it's more of a performance issue however with the game not being well optimized and such (though the fact that this game has the slowest running animations in the series doesn't help at all, lol). But, at least, I will have played it all. Anyway, I will keep playing it as I want to give it a chance. However I'd assume that changes in the later chapters and it is nowhere near as repetitive as the backtracking in 3. Now, from what I've played so far, some of the chapters do repeat the areas, Ruka's for example. They really take a lot of your health even in normal difficulty. The translation might also play a part in the enjoyment as some of the text doesn't make much sense sometimes. Maybe that is intentional though as there are less upgrades this time around.

However, the flashlight and store are welcome additions! Upgrade progression feels a bit slow, like the upgrades are very expensive (30 crystals for a lv1 power upgrade?).

Not a fan of the gameplay haha! I personally do not like that it feels super slow, especially when opening doors, the animation of trying a locked door feels like FOREVER. Also, it's true that the game dares to be different and that's a good thing even if not everything works. No worries! Thanks for such a detailed response! Yeah I do agree that the modern environment makes for a nice change of scenery. Sorry for the long rant, I'm very passionate about the game lmao. It's not going to be everyone's cup of tea but that's understandable. People like more Fatal Frame games to be as samey as possible, to not have that many new elements just the same good ol stuff, while some people want the series to include more modern or different ideas so that the future of the series doesn't go stale and unoriginal.Ĥ was an entry that, at the end, wasn't afraid to try a different setting compared to the previous ones, and I very much respect the game for it. Some people like Fatal Frame purely because of the oldish Japanese setting, other people play it for the unique gameplay compared to other survival horror franchises. Obviously it's all based on what you like about the games. At some point, as much as the setting of a horror set in a Japanese-folklore filled environment is appealable, it gets boring if nothing new is brought into the game, which is why 4 stands out so much to me, with how different the whole aspect of introducing a story that mixes modernity (the Hospital) and tradition (the shrines and rituals set in said Hospital).

I can definitely see why if people play the games chronologically they consider 3 their least favorite because it has a LOT of regurgitated ideas and the same backtracking that people don't really like. Idk, I guess the appeal of 4 to me is that as much as I love the first 3 games, it starts to feel a little bit samey while 4 tried to incorporate a variety of ideas with a mix of Western and Japanese-Eastern settings. What I love the most about 4 is the fact that it doesn't do the same formula that other entries in the series do which is:Įxplore brand new area -> Hope you like said area cause you are gonnq backtrack to it at least 5 times.Įvery area in 4 is brand new, you only see each room once or maybe twice at most, and it has a lot of subtle environmental details for a place that you are only going to see for a couple of seconds. The story is very indepth and bittersweet but it mostly feels convoluted because its translation was mostly worked on by people who weren't hardcore fans, so theybpretty much translated the documents and text as is rather thank taking the translation as a whole, like most proper localizing companies do they just wanted to bring the game to the fanbase in a playable/readable state. Gameplay-wise I would definitely say it's the weakest, my favorite thing about gameplay I'd say are the ghosts animations which are very uncanny and realistic compared to the previous entries.

If I'm being completely honest the only reason why it's because it's the first game in the series that wasn't afraid to explore different settings ane ideas and just go all out. TL DR - 4 tries to explore new concepts compared to previous entries, some people like that, others don't it's all based on taste.Ĥ is my personal favorite in the series.
